"Kalevalsky Carnival"

Issue circumstances:

A festival dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the first full edition of Karelian-Finnish epos "Kalevala" a monument of literature culture known all over the world.

The place of the carnival:

Petrozavodsk, Reacreation Park, Embankment, Lenin Avenue, Round Square, Karl Marx Avenue, Kirov`s Square, the Embankment of the Onega Lake.

Dates:

June, 26-27 1999 (opening time is 6 pm June, 26, closing time is 2 am June, 27)

The general conception thesis:

"Kalevala" is a great book of Karelian and Finnish nations containing their spiritual culture, ideology, way of thinking, history and traditions.

The citizens of Karelia are especially proud of the fact that these runas were born here, on our Karelian land.

"Kalevala" is a peace-loving and humanistic epos, glorifying Good, Labour and Eternal Beauty.

Having visited Kalevalsky carnival, everybody will be able to accustom to the culture of the countries-participants, to understand more deeply its peculiarities and traditions

The democratic form of the carnival allows to overcome language, national and politic barries, to create the uniform cultural space under aegis Creativity and"Kalevala".

The dramatic composition of the carnival:

A citizen and a guest or the Republic of Karelia has a unique opportunity to make a symbolic trip with the characters of the Kalevala epos in a charming season of white nights.

Part I. It begins with a theatrical musical-dancing performance "The Pohyla Wedding"in a Green Theater of the Park.

Part II. Carnival parade of the Kalevala characters on the route: The Green Theater-the embankment of the Onega Lake - Lenin avenue - Herzen Street - The Round Square - Karl Marx Avenue (a big circle and the end of the parade). On the square there will be outdoor fete, professional and folk ansamble performance from Finland, Sweden, Karelia.

Part III. Torch-light procession from the square to the Embankment of the Onega Lake.

Part IV. "Yuchannus&uot; ("Ivanova night") in the park on the embankment. Bonfires and the night of fortune-telling.

Realisation:

Mass street festival-carnival available to all the citizens.

The technics of realisation:

  • The Green Theater in the Reacreation Park, where at 6 pm the theatrical musical-dancing performance "The Pohyola Wedding" will begin. The participants are: folk ansamble"Karelskaya Gornitsa" ansamble from Ranua (Finland) and others (about 300 people totally). The audience has an opportunity to learn traditional Kalevala characters, to take part in folk games and dances.
  • At 7.15 pm - all the participants of the carnival parade are to meet near the Green Park Theater.
  • 7.30 pm - the Kalevala parade goes to the embankment followed by the other participants.
  • There will be 4 performance stages: two are on the embankment, the third one is near the Swedish monument,and the fourth one is on the Round Square.
  • The speeches of the leaders of the Republic of Karelia and the guests from other regions and countries wil take place on Kirov`s Square. Then the ansambles will begin their performances. Artists, photographers, craftsmen will be working on the square.
    The participants and spectactors have a chance to try the national meals and drinks, to buy souveniers.
  • At 10 pm the participants of the carnival with torch-lights are descending to the park on the Embankment of the Onega Lake. The organisers "Yuhannus" ("Ivanova night") will meet them there. Bonfires, boating, fortune-telling and games will continue till 2.00 am the white night.
  • At the finale the participants have the opportunity to exchange their impressions, and photographers and journalists to make reports on the event.

The citizens of Petrozavodsk of all ages, tourists from other regions and countries.

The participants:

Professional theater ansambles, concert organizations, amateur groups, the Center of National Culture, the Center of Folk Creativity, actors and musitians from Finland and Sweden.

Information and advertizing:

Reviews, summaries, abstracts in printing and electronic mass-media, advertisments on the street posters.
