The Day of the Republic in Karelia will be Day-off,
the Residents of the Capital will Celebrate the 80th Anniversary of the State System
PETROZAVODSK, February 11. /The Itar-Tass corr. Vladimir Zlobin/. The 8th of June will be a day-off. It was reported at the briefing in the local government. The event was dedicated to the preparation of 80th anniversary celebration of the Republic of Karelia.
The Day of the Republic was established last year. The date is significant. It is on the 8th of June in 1920 the Decree of formation of Karelian Labor Commune was adopted by VZIK RSFSR. Thus the state
system of the present day Republic of Karelia came into being.
It was told at the briefing that the Republic of Karelia will receive a lot of guests from Moscow,
St. Petersburg and the regions inhabited by Finnish-Ugric people, and also from Finland, Hungary and Estonia. Among them the Prime-Minister of Finland Paavo Lipponen, who has already accepted the invitation.
One of the greatest events of the holiday will be sanctification of one of the biggest cathedrals in the Republic of Karelia - the Alexander Nevsky cathedral. It used to be closed during the Soviet times for 65 years. The Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexei II is supposed to head the ceremony of sanctification.
The construction of the house of veterans is being completed. The foundation was laid out on June 8 1999. So, the veterans will get the keys to their new apartments in a year.
