A visit of the delegation of the Republic of Karelia to Brussels
On May 3 the visit of the delegation of the Republic of Karelia to Brussels led by S. Katanandov,
Head of the Government of the Republic of Karelia was held. V. Shlyamin, Minister of foreign relations RK and D. Bazegsky, Chief of the department of international projects and programs, were the members of the delegations. The objective of the visit was promotion of the interests of our republic within the TACIS and Interreg programs. In the course of the visit negotiations in the head- quarters of Commission of European Communities (CEC) were held. The delegation got acquainted with the activities of the Representative of the Union of communes of Eastern Finland in Brussels.
The parties exchanged their opinions on the accomplishment of the TACIS projects in the Republic of Karelia, the promotion on the EU initiative the "Northern dimension" project, and the North-western regions of Russia participation in it. Representatives of CEC have backed "umbrella" project "Euroregion Karelia" as a pilot model for the partnership between the EU and Russia within the frames of "Northern dimension" project. As a result of negotiations the agreement on financing by the European Union the international automobile check- in point in Louhsky district was achieved. The construction of the check-in point is supposed to be started in the spring of 2002. Besides, the parties have reached the agreement of allocation the means from "Ecological Fund" made specially for funding the projects in the Republic of Karelia within the frames of the "Northern dimension" program.
In the course of discussion the following projects were considered promising for the Republic of Karelia: "Development of information technologies in the Republic of Karelia" and " Restoration of salmon fish resources in the reservoirs of the Republic of Karelia." The Parties considered the initiative of the Government RK and Petrozavodsk State University to create Technopark on its base and the schedule of sewage construction in Sortavala. In the course of negotiations the issue of the first stage of the TACIS project accomplishment "Tourism development in the North-West RF" was discussed.
