The Largest Wild Geese Stopping Place in the Republic of Karelia Used for Holding "Geese Holiday"

PETROZAVODSK, May 12 /The ITAR -TASS corr. Vladimir Zlobin/. The largest wild geese stopping place, located in Olonetsky district on the shore of the Ladoga lake in, has become the center of nature lovers attraction not only from Russia, but also from Scandinavian countries. Today "geese" holiday has been held here. The program included concerts, exhibitions, domestic geese races and excursions to the stopping places of their wild kin.

"The number of wild geese, stopping for a rest in Olonetsky district on their way to Arctic, makes about 1,5 mln birds," Evgenij Jeshko, Deputy Head of Presidium of Karelian Research Center, Doctor of biological sciences told the ITAR -TASS correspondent. "They are attracted by the huge fields for growing wheat."

According to the scientist's words, the Government of the Republic of Karelia and local ecologists try their best to guard birds and enlargening the fields for their feeding. All-World Fund of Wild Nature, and in particular, its Swedish section, helps a lot. The birds feel quite comfortable and secure. After spending the daytime on the fields, they flow to the Ladoga lake to pass the night. Last updated: 18 May 2001
