April, 4 the meeting of the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin and the Head of the Government of Karelia Sergey Leonidovich Katanandov has taken place in the Kremlin.
The President of the Russian Federation has discussed social and economic situation in the republic with the Head of the Government of Karelia. During the meeting state of affairs in the wood industry and preparation of celebrating of the 300-th anniversary of Petrozavodsk was mentioned, which will be celebrated in 2003.
Vladimir Putin was interested how the salary to the workers of the budgetary sphere is paid in Karelia.
"Unfortunately, we have current delays in the salary payments, and we have agreed with the President, that this problem would be taken under control", - Sergey Katanandov has told by the end of the meeting. - "Today we have arrangements with the Ministry of Finance of Russia on the increase of the help to our region. On the other hand, it is necessary to remember, that the republic should earn for its existence independently. At the meeting there we have discussed the further support of teachers, and I have made the offer to create the national council on education in the country. Vladimir Vladimirovich promised to think about it."
The President has also confirmed the readiness to assist in reconstruction of National Theatre, and also in construction of the second platform of Petrozavodsk State University, and has entrusted the Prime Minister, the Minister of Culture, and the Minister of Education to render the necessary support to the republic.
Sergey Katanandov has submitted the problem of existing duties on export production for discussion with the President.
"I have reported to Vladimir Vladimirovich that now, in connection with the falling of the world prices for saw-timbers, paper, and aluminium, our enterprises suffer great losses, and at same time the state holds high duties. We have discussed the opportunity of introduction of "floating" duties, which would vary depending on the prices for export production. The President has agreed that the Ministry of Economics of the Russian Federation should constantly trace the present situation and adjust export duties more flexibly. I am convinced, that on the basis of my report after our meeting the appropriate assignments will be given," - Sergey Katanandov has told.
Of course, the interlocutors not have ignored the problem of intention of the Ministry of Atomic Energy of the Russian Federation to construct the new atomic power station in Karelia.
"I have informed the President that this project appeared to be absolutely unexpected for the inhabitants of Karelia," - Sergey Katanandov has told, - "our position regarding this problem is known. The President has listened to my reasons and has written on our letter the resolution to the Head of the Government Mikhail Kasianov: "To develop the solution of the problem through visiting the place". I believe that as a whole this meeting will have salutary consequences for the republic."
