Karelia and Finland realize the Monument to Winter War joint project

PETROZAVODSK, June 19 INTERFAX NORTHWEST - Karelia and Finland within the framework of Interreg IIIA Karelia Eurounion program have started realization of Winter war Monument the project devoted to the Soviet-Finnish military campaign of 1939-40.

The basic purpose of the project is determining names of those lost in fights near Suomussalmi, as INTERFAX was informed by project head Marko Seppanen. As he said, "this work demands enormous patience, self-feedback and good will on the part of many people, including outside of Karelia and Finland." As he has reminded, two main divisions participating in the Winter War, were formed in Tula and in Ukraine. "There at the expemse of the Finnish party participants of the project will accomplish their search work in archives and will try to find those who remember or know something about those who never came back from the war," M.Seppanenhas noted.

Now within the framework of the project in Suomussalmi commune in Finland the Monument in memory to the Finnish and Soviet soldiers lost during Winter war of 1939-40 is already founded. The memorial includes the Exposed Embraces monument and the Stone Field where 20 thousand stones symbolize the lost soldiers.

On M.Seppanen's words, the Monument to Winter War projectn is "the first example of effectiveness of national diplomacy under which influence reassessment and change of the attitude towards events of the past on the part of historians, military, official structures in each of the states occurres."

The Soviet-Finnish war began on November 30, 1939, and lasted for 105 days. On the part of the USSR the death-roll has reached 600 thousand persons, and 30 thousand on the part of Finland.
