On the day of the 300th anniversary of Petrozavodsk the oldest in the city orthodox Candlemas church was consecrated after restoration

PETROZAVODK. /Correspondent of SPB-TASS Vladimir Zlobin/. In Karelia celebrations on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the capital of the republic of Petrozavodsk today began. The important event in the program of celebration is consecration of the most ancient orthodox temple of the city the Candlemas Church. The solemn ceremony was held by Manuil, archbishop of Petrozavodsk and Karelian. The head of of Karelia Sergey Katanandov, other heads of the republic and the city attended the church opening ceremony.

Constructed in 1775 on the high rocky coast of Onego lake this temple was closed under the decision of bolsheviks in 1932. It was plundered and partly destroyed. Later in this building a warehouse, a school, a hostel, and a store were located. One of business companies had a sauna in the altar part of the church. Only in 1996 the church has recievied its status back, it became the property of the eparchy. Soon at the initiative of parishioners the reconstruction of the building began. Means for this purpose were refined from private donations, and also from budgets of the republic, the city and the eparchy.

Congratulations to northerners on the occasion of the anniversary of the city and consecration of Camdlemas Church was sent by Alexy II, Holy Patriarch of Moscow and All- Russia.
