International Finno-Ugric Students' Conference to be held in Petrozavodsk

On May 14-16 Petrozavodsk will host the International Finno-Ugric Students' Conference IFUSCO 2009.

The first IFUSCO conference was held in Germany (1984) in Goettingen. It was organized by students studying Ural languages. The following conferences have been organized at various universities of Europe. Of Finno-Ugric countries Finland was the first to join this movement, and in territory of Russia the first IFUSCO conference was held in Syktyvkar in 1999.

It is a great honour for Karelia to receive the XXVth anniversary conference of young Finno-Ugric researchers on the ancient land of Kalevala. It is held within the scope of the Year of Youth and the II Decade of the World Indigenous People.

The purpose of the international youth forum is activization of research work in higher professional educational establishments of Finno-Ugric countries and regions of Russia, involving representatives of youth Finno-Ugric organizations and students to active participation in implementation of socially significant projects and programs directed on preservation and development of languages of Finno-Ugric peoples, formation of national consciousness and active citizenship.

More thanb 150 underhraduate and post-graduate students from 10 regions of the Russian Federation, Finland, Hungary and Estonia will take part in the conference. Young researchers will present their scientific achievements in linguistics, politics, law, history, folklore, native language teaching methods, sociology, and literature. Interesting and factful reports in all spheres of humanities are prepared by young Finno-Ugric researchers from Karelia - students of higher educational institutions of Petrozavodsk.

Organizers of the conference have to see about the cultural leisure of participants. The guests will have fun at the ethno-disco-club, will visit the Karelian village of Bolshaya Selga of Olonets national metropolitan region where the extensive ethnocultural program with tasting national Karelian dishes and batches will be presented, will get acquainted with museum exhibitions, learn secrets of kanlele, ancient musical instrument. The conference will open on May 14 at noon in the assembly hall of Petrozavodsk State University.
