Congress of Russian Geographical Society may be held in Karelia

Meeting at the Head of the Republic

Meeting at the Head of the Republic

Prospects of carrying out of Congress of Russian Geographical Society in Karelia this autumn were considered on January 20, at the meeting presided by the Head of the Republic of Karelia Sergey Katanandov.

Russian Geographical Society is a public organization, one of the oldest geographical societies in the world. On August 18, 1845 by the order of H.I.M. Imperior Nicholas I there had been approved the submission of the Minister of Internal Affairs of Russia Earl Lev Perovsky on establishing of Russian Geographical Society in St.-Petersburg (later – the Imperial Russian Geographical Society). The main purpose of founders of the Society was studying "the native land and living people there", namely collecting and distribution of geographical, statistical and ethnographic data on Russia itself.

Among founders of Russian Geographical Society there were Vice-Admiral Fedor Litke, Rear-Admiral Ferdinand Vrangel, academicians Karl Ber, Peter Keppen, Vasily Struve and others. The idea to establish the society has appeared so interesting and useful that from the moment of foundation of Russian Geographical Society the best minds of Russia took part in its activity, and the son of Nikolay I, Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaevich, has agreed to be its first chairman. Names of such great scientists and travellers as Nikolai Miklouho-Maklay, Peter Semenov-Tyan-Shanskiy, Nikolai Przhevalsky are associated with activity of the Russian Geographical Society. From 1931 to 1940 the Society's Chairman was Nikolai Vavilov.

Now Vladimir Putin is the chairman of the Board of guardians of the Society, and its president is Sergey Shoigu.

In August Russian Geographical Society will celebrate its 165 anniversary, and this remarkable date almost coincides with the anniversary of the Republic of Karelia. This is one of the reasons why the idea of carrying out of the Congress of the Society in Karelia is especially exciting.

– It is of great honour for us, and whatever decision Presidium of the Society makes, we ought to be panoplied, – Sergey Katanandov said at the meeting.

In his opinion, the main thing now is to provide synchronization of work of regional authorities and the Steering Committee of the Congress established in Moscow. Head of the Republic has ordered to form a special working group and to send a letter to the Presidium of Russian Geographical Society on readiness of the Republic of Karelia to host the Congress and on our offers on activities that may be held under the aegis of the Society.

Coordination of this work on behalf of the Head of the Republic is assigned to the Assistant to the Prime Minister of the Government of Karelia Alexander Kolesov who is, by the way, a member of Russian Geographical Society and has recently received the brand-new membership card.
