The organizing committee of the expedition

In the beginning of April, 2013 it is planned to launch a sled dog expedition from the North Pole and give it the name Karelia: North Pole Greenland. Its participants will be a famous Russian traveller Feodor Konyukhov and vice-president of the mushing federation of Karelia Viktor Simonov. The expedition will be held on sled dogs bred in our republic. Within four months the travellers expect to cover the distance of more than 3000 km from the North Pole to the southern extremity of Greenland. Thus, they will make the longest sled dog trip across the Arctic regions. The overall objective of the project is promotion of the image of Karelia in the international tourist market.

Head of Karelia Alexander Khudilainen has signed the order of the Government of the republic on establishing the organizing committee for preparation for the expedition. The organizing committee, except for Feodor Konyukhov, includes director of the Russian State Museum of the Arctic and the Antarctic Victor Boyarsky, chairman of the Legislative Assembly of Karelia and chairman of the mushing federation of Karelia Vladimir Semenov, Minister of Youth Affairs, Physical Training, Sports and Tourism of the Republic of Karelia Alexander Voronov and other officials.

Success of the race has led to the idea to make it one of the cards and distinctive features of Karelia. Feodor Konyukhov supported the idea, and to win the reputation in the world it was decided to organize a really complex and serious expedition to the Arctic regions in which a sportsman from Karelia and sled dogs bred in the republic would take part.

I'm very glad to be in Kareliya, I like this region very much. When I have visited Karelia and have seen the development of the mushing sports I have understood that this is where this kind of sports has become naturalized and will develop every year. The climate of the republic and that fact that Karelia is the most close region to Europe will promote development of sled dog races. These sports have chances to become national here. In Karelia there is an opportunity to arrange the most interesting, complex and prestigious sled dog races that will distinguish the republic among other regions of the country. The trip to the North Pole will draw attention of all the world to Karelia, Feodor Konyukhov said at the press conference.

Another prominent aspect of the trio, in Feodor Konyukhov's opinion, is the opportunity to interest children and teenagers in sports and active healthy way of life. Participants of the expedition plan to make a special film for children about the trip, to tell about the expedition on the Internet, to support interest to it among the schoolchildren of Karelia.

The famous traveller has shared impression and of his meeting with Head of Karelia where the plan of implementation of the project was discussed.

Yesterday I met Head of the republic Alexander Khudilainen the first time and I understood that he is a romanticist, his eyes blazed, and he understands breeds of dogs very well, he has a dog, Feodor Konyukhov said.

Karelian participant of the expedition-to-be Victor Semenov has told about its basic stages. Acclimatization of sled dogs from Karelia will begin since March, 15 in Murmansk region; then people, the equipment and dogs will be delivered to the Arctic base of Barneo 70 kilometers from the North Pole. On April, 1 it is planned to start the trip. The most difficult site is expected to be the rise on the ice plateau of Greenland. The finish is planned for August 1, 2013. By this time participants intend to reach the southern extremity of the island.

Feodor Konyukhov and Victor Semenov plan to use one or two 12-dog sleds. Except for a forage for animals they will take all the cargo with them. Several times during the trip they will receive forages delivered by plane. The expedition will be financed from the involved means of sponsors and unappropriated sources.

Answering the question on difficulties of the trip, Feodor Konyukhov has shared impressions about his previous Arctic travel. The famous researcher has joked that in trips to the North at first it is very difficult, and then it just gets more and more difficult.

The route which Karelian expedition has planned to take was in the 1970s passed by legendary Japanese traveller Naomi Uemura who, unfortunately, never completed his journey. Feodor Konyukhov and Viktor Simonov will become the first after Naomi Uemura to try to pass this route.

Chairman of the Legislative Assembly of the republic Vladimir Semenov has told about importance of the project at the press conference. In his opinion, success of the expedition will be the acknowledgement of that Karelia can organize routes so complex, and mushing sports in the republic have chances to become a feature of the region.

We support expedition, we hope, that travellers will prove once again, how strong a man can be, how he survives and works in the hardship of the Arctic. The major purpose of such expeditions is education of youth, to excite boys and girls to become like Feodor Konyukhov and Viktor Simonov, Chairman of the Legislative Assembly said.
