Discussing the landscape planning project

The Ministry of Nature Management and Ecology of the Republic of Karelia was a venue for a meeting devoted to discussion of issues of cooperation within the project of Integrated landscape planning in cross-border regions of Russia and Finland for sustainable use of nature resources and maintaining biodiversity (KARLANDS) coordinated by University of Eastern Finland. Representatives of the Ministry, research officers of University of Eastern Finland, Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment for North Karelia, Budgetary Nature Protection Recreational Agency of the Republic of Karelia Directorate of Regional Protected Areas of the Republic of Karelia, Kostomukshskiy Nature Reserve, Petrozavodsk State University, and Lesnoe Buro Partner Ltd took part in the meeting.

As the project coordinators observed in the course of the discussion, the project is aimed to promote development of efficient management of Karelian landscapes, through development of integrated landscape plan in Muezerskiy and Kostomuksa regions in Karelia, and provinces of Ilomantsi, Lieksa, Kuhmo in Finland. It is expected to develop common spatially explicit database on natural resources of these territories, to update natural resources and biodiversity data using remote sensing, to evaluate the impact of nature use intensification in cross-border context.

On results of the meeting representatives of the Ministry of Nature Management and Ecology of the RK have accepted proposals of coordinators of the cross-border cooperation project. According to the Head of the Department for the State Forest Register and GIS Nikolai Puteshov, the Ministry will provide informational support of the project that will consist in rendering official information in the sphere of nature management of the republic. In turn, the project coordinators from University of Eastern Finland have offered the Ministry an opportunity to use a common database generated in the course of landscape planning in cross-border regions, as well as to organize trainings and workshops for Karelian experts within the scope of the project.

The project Integrated landscape planning in cross-border regions of Russia and Finland for sustainable use of nature resources and maintaining biodiversity (KARLANDS) is coordinated by University of Eastern Finland as a part of Karelia European Neighbourhood Partnership Instrument cross-border cooperation program (Karelia ENPI CBC) implemented in the regions Kainuu, North Karelia and Oulu in Finland and in the republic of Karelia in Russia.
