Head of Karelia and Consul General of Norway in St.Petersburg have discussed prospects and options to enhance bilateral cooperation

A meeting of Head of Karelia Alexander Khudilainen with Consul General of the Kingdom of Norway in St.Petersburg Heidi Olufsen took place in the Government of Karelia on November, 19.

The meeting participants have discussed prospects of enhancement of bilateral cooperation between Norway and Karelia, and possibilities of participation of Norwegian business representatives in various projects of social and cultural development of the region.

At the moment, cooperation develops in several directions, including within the Barents Euro-Arctic Region, sister-city relations, as well as in the line of bilateral relations in accordance with the Agreement on Cooperation between the Republic of Karelia and Troms county signed in 1994.

It is related to public health service, protection of the environment, studying of natural and cultural heritage, support of indigenous peoples. Within the past three years the number of joint social projects had grown three-fold.

Development of contacts between Karelian Research Center of the Russian Academy of Science and higher educational institutions and research centers of Norway is in progress. Fish industry enterprises of Karelia purchase fishing boats, fish fodder and equipment for commodity fish breeding in Norway. On results of 2013, foreign trade turnover between Norway and Karelia has made 33,6 million dollars.

– Welcome to Karelia! We're interested in extension of our cooperation, and I believe we've got some common subjects for discussion and further cooperation, – Alexander Khudilainen has told welcoming the delegation participants.

Head of the region has told the representatives of the Consulate General of Norway about the measures taken in the republic to attract investors and improve the investment climate, as well as about the large-scale work conducted within the scope of preparation for celebrating the 100th anniversary of the republic. He has also mentioned that Karelia is interested to develop contacts in the sphere of tourism, culture, education, power generation and energy efficiency, and to involve Norwegian investments in the economy of our republic.

In turn, as possible spheres for cooperation Heidi Olufsen has pointed out fish farming that has been developing in the republic both in inland water reservoirs, and at the White Sea coast.

One of the issues on the agenda of the Norwegian delegation in Petrozavodsk was opening of the Visa Service Centre of Norway in the capital of Karelia. Therefore, Alexander Khudilainen has expressed confidence that considering best practices of cooperation between Norway and Karelia issuing of Norwegian visas will be popular in the republic. Head of Karelia has also invited the guests to take part in celebrating the Day of the Republic next year on June, 6 in the town of Sortavala.
