The meeteing with the Karelian Congress representatives
On January, 25 the Head of the Government of the Republic met with the Karelian Congress representatives where famous political and cultural workers Victor Bogdanov, Petr Zaikov, Lyudmila Markianova, Alexander Volkov participated. The Chairman of the State Commitee of National Policy
Victor Ahtiev also took part in the meeting.
Modern problems of Karelian nation were discussed. Why the Karelian language teachers do not come to work in district schools? Why a lot of Karelians do not know their own language? Why it is more prestigeous now to learn Finnish? These problems were under discussion with the Head of the Government. The problems of national education including Karelian and Veps languages studying in particular, national media development were also discussed. The Head of the Government approved of the proposal to make a special funding for solving these problems in the republican budget from 2000.
"In the first place we understanand as preserving national Karelian culture not creating special conditions but taking specific measures to keep and develop Karelian villages", highlighted Sergey Katanandov in the course of the meeting.
