Agriculture was the Priority Area in the Boundary Cooperation between the Republic of Karelia and Finland in 1999
PETROZAVODSK, November, 26. /The Itar-Tass corr. Vladimir Zlobin/. The cooperation between the Republic of Karelia and Finland was very fruitful in 1999: about 30 joint projects have been accomplished in various areas of economics and social section. The minister of foreign relations Valery Shlyamin has spoken about that at the briefing in Petrozavodsk.
"Within the framework of cooperation the Finnish party rendered gratuitous financial and material assistance to the Republic of Karelia in the total sum of 6,7 mln Fmk," the minister said. "The priority was given to the solution of the agricultural problems in the Karelian economy. Two thirds of the total sum was released to these purposes."
The cooperation experience with the Finns showed that one can get heavy crop even in the North provided high technologies. For example, the so-called vegetable project, accomplished with the help of the colleges from Finland, allowed to get heavy crop of cabbage in the Republic of Karelia. Now the republic does not import it from other regions, and it is cheaper in the Republic of Karelia than in Moscow or in St.Petersburg. Besides, it is 5 times less labor consuming thanks to the Finnish technology.
Good results have been achieved in the area of public health care, welfare, ecology. The joint plans of cooperation envision a lot of new perspective projects. To accomplish all these projects it is scheduled to release 6 mln Fmk to the Republic of Karelia on the line of the ministry of foreign affairs of Finland.
