The Valaam Archipelago in the Ladoga Lake Received the Status of the Natural Park
PETROZAVODSK, December,3 /The Itar-Tass corr. Vladimir Zlobin/. A new natural park is being laid out in the Republic of Karelia. It bears the name
"The Valaamsky Archipelago". The deputies of the Legislative assembly of the republic adopted the decision to establish the guarded islands of the Ladoga lake within the boundaries of the unique historical and landscape territory, where the world famous architectural monuments of the Valaam monastery are situated.
The deputies were guided by the Decree of the President RF from July 12 , 1992 N 760. According to this decree the Valaam archipelago was given the status of a single and unique especially valuable historic-cultural and natural territory of the Russian Federation. The main objective of a new park establishment is preserving the monuments of history and culture and natural landscape.
Special rights were given to the local residents (about 500 people) and to the clergymen and monks (150 people). They are allowed to own land lots to grow agricultural products, pick up wild growing mushrooms and berries, go fishing and hunting.
