Main goals and functions

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Karelia is a territorial body of Federal executive power (it is submitted to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russian Federation) and at the same time it is within the stucture of executive power of the Republic of Karelia.

The ministry functions on the base of the Law of RSFSR "About Militia" from April 18, 1991, in the redaction of federal laws N73 of Federal Law from June 15, 1996, and N68 of Federal Law from March 31, 1999, and regulations on the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Karelia approved by the Decree of the Head of the Republic of Karelia from August 27, 2002, N144.

Primary goals of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Republic Karelia are:

• personal accident prevention of citizens;
• prevention and suppression of crimes and administrative offences;
• disclosing of crimes;
• protection of public order and maintenance of public safety;
• rendering assistance within the limits established by the Law of the Russian Federation "About Militia", to citizens, officials, enterprises, institutions, organizations, public organizations and associations in realization of their legitimate rights and interests.
