The Orchestra of Russian National Instruments ONEGO

History

The Orchestra of Russian National Instruments ONEGO has been founded in December, 1974. That year the trade union of the Onego Tractor Plant has suggested Gennady Mironov, the teacher of Petrozavodsk branch of the Leningrad conservatory, to create and head the orchestra of Russian national instruments which would work at the house of culture of the enterprise. Although this undertaking was not simple, the young conductor achieved much success, and the orchestra's debut took place at the Folk Art Festival in Petrozavodsk on March the 29th, 1975. This date is considered to be the birthday of the orchestra.

Originally most the orchestra participants were amateur musicians: workers, teachers of instituteû of higher education, doctors, students and others. Despite of this fact from the very beginning the performing level was rather high. Although the orchestra was considered to be the "plant's" collective, it has made numerous tours, performed in cities and settlements of Karelia, in Moscow, Leningrad, Archangelsk, Vilnius, Vologda, Kishinev, Minsk, Novgorod, Novosibirsk, Severodvinsk, Tallinn, Tver, as well as abroad in Finland, Germany, and Sweden. It participated in various All-Russian and all-Union festivals, and became the winner repeatedly.

The history of amateur orchestra ONEGO came to the end in the beginning of the 1990s. By then its numbers have replenished with professional musicians, its performing level has grown. The orchestra has received the status of the professional collective and with a concert which is taken place on November the 30th, 1993, has celebrated the beginning of the work within the precincts of the Karelian State Philarmonic Society.

The list of ONEGO's creative achievements is rather great and impressive. The number of the concerts that collected full houses in Russia and abroad and passed with constant success on the most various platforms and even in reformatories is huge. Audio-tapes, records, a compact disc "Orchestra of Russian National Instruments ONEGO" (2000, Sweden) have been recorded. Hundreds od articles in periodicals are devoted to the orchestra's creativity.

The Present Day

There are 40 musicians in the orchestra, most of them are graduates of the A.K.Glazunov Petrozavodsk State Conservatory. The repertoir totals about two thousand compositions, including original pieces of modern composers, classics of symphonic music arranged for the folk orchestra, arias and romances of Russian and foreign composers, city romances, Russian folk songs and dances, compositions for the orchestra of Russian national instruments. The significant place in the repertoir belongs to compositions of Karelian composers Helmer Sinisalo, Albina Repnikova, Roine Rautio, Valentin Konchakov among which there are compositions created specially for the orchestra.

Every month the orchestra gives 3-4 concerts. Subscription cycles of the orchestra are invariable appreciated by the public as almost every performance of the orchestra is a new program. Every concert season the orchestra takes part in large philharmonic projects: charitable balls, concerts at tables of the Big hall of the Philarmonic Society, composers' soirees, etc.

The Orchestra ONEGO is headed by the honored worker of arts of Russia, the deserved art worker of the Republic of Karelia Gennady Mironov. The orchestra possesses high professional reputation, owing to this fact the citizens and visitors of Petrozavodsk and the republic have an opportunity to come to concerts of talented Russian musicians. Many famour soloists performed with the orchestra - Alexander Eizen, Alexander Vedernikov, Sergey Zaharov, Rinat Ibragimov, Alexander Strelchenko, Anna Litvinenko, Evgeny Polikanin, Nadezhda Krygina, Alexander Tsygankov, Victor Gridin, Yury Sidorov, Andrey Gorbachev, Larissa Rydlevskaya, and others.

From its foundation the Orchestra ONEGO is the companion of the N.P.Osipov National Academic Orchestra of National Instruments conducted by the national actor of Russia, the winner of the State Premium of Russia Nikolay Kalinin. The two conductors are connected both with their service to the common cause, and personal friendship.

The deserved art worker of the Republic of Karelia Nina Doroshina is the constant presenter of concerts of the Orchestra ONEGO.
