Industry

In 1999 industry was being restored and even grew.

In the industrial structure of the republic the forest complex the largest field of employment - 53% of all employees in the industry- plays the most important role in the republic, it is the most In 1999 it made 30% income of the republican budget.

In woodprocessing industry the industrial volume rates were growing more rapidly comparing to 1998 (131,7%) than in the forest industry in general.

On the whole stable work characterizes enterprises of pulp and paper industry. Last year paper production grew by 27 %, pulp - by 87, paperbags - 41%, paperboard - 39%.

The second large is metallurgy industry. In 1999 the industry volume rate in ferrous metal industry grew by 3,7 % comparing to 1998.

In mining industry volume index made 114% in extractive industry , 132% in construction materials production comparing to 1998.

1999 was marked by production volume growth in makingmachinery industry -volume index made 146,1%.

Energy power supply. The situation with energy power supply kept strenuous in 1999. It was caused by the lack of fuel and hidro-resources at the elecrostations OES of North-West of Russia, decrease of production of own electrical energy by 8,6% and growth of electro power consume of OAO "Karelian granule", ÀÎ "Kondopoga" and other large enterprises and also resale consumers. The contribution of the industry to the budget income decreased from 7,4 in 1998 to 6,4 in 1999.

Agricutural complex. On the whole the volume of agricultural production increased comparing to 1998 by 7%, and in agricultural enterprises - by 17%.

Processing industry of the republic increased production volume by 4% comparing to 1998. It was achieved at the account of fish and alcohol production. Meat and vegetable branches decreased by 23% and 42% for 1999respectfully.

Civil engineering. The volume of contract works made 1006 mln rbl in 1999. It's 38,8% more than in 1998. .

Transport. In 1999 increased shipment of all branches of industry by 15,2%, freight turnover increased by 7,5 %. By planes more than 11thousnd passengers were transported (190% comparing to 1998), and 24 times more was cargo carrying. Sea-borne freight turnover made 1260 tons, including construction freight - 665 thousand tons, timber freight-282 thousand tons, ferrous metals - 158 thousand tons. On the background of growth of transportation volumes by railroad transport, the financial situation of Petrozavodsk part of October railroad is still complicated. Passengers` transportation decreased drastically, comparing to 1998 passengers` transportation turnover decreased by 10%.

Communication. In 1999 the total service volume made 383,5 mln rbl or 128% comparing to 1998. The residents of the republic enjoyed communication services for 160,9 mln rbl, which makes 137% comparing to 1998.

Highways development. During 1999 124,6 km of automobile roads were repaired, including 58,9 km covered with asphalt roads, 65,7 km with transition type of covering, which makes 2,4 times more than in 1998. 32,7 km of automobile roads were constructed. It's 12,1 more than in 1998. 9 new bridges were built (418 m in length), and 1293,8 linear meters of bridges were repaired (increased by 31%), more 100km of automobile roads were taken into the net.
