Peter I (1672-1725)
In 1703-1707 Peter I has created the network of Olonets mining factories in Karelia, which were important for provision of the Russian army and fleet with weapons and ammunition during the Northern war. He has also became the founder of Petrozavodsk (1703). In 1719 Peter I has opened the first Russian Spa "Marcial Waters" in the region.
Gavrila Derzhavin (1743-1816)
Gavrila Romanovitch Derzhavin was the First governor of the Olonets province (1784-1785). Under G.Derzhavin 's initiative the first city hospital, the drugstore, and the Public Charity Department opened in Petrozavodsk. Being the avocate of the "educated
absolutism", he has resolutely struggled with the officials' abusings, bribery and corruption, aspired to introduce strict order in provincial institutions. He has made a significant contribution to studying Karelia and collected an extensive information about the region.
Edward Gyulling (1881-1938)
Edward Aleksandrovich (Edward Otto William) Gyulling was the Finnish internationalist and the economist. Since June 1920 he was chairman of the Karelian revolutionary committee carrying out organization of the Karelian Labour Commune. E.Gyulling participated in preparation of the All-Union Central Executive Committee's and the Soviet of People's Commissars of the RSFSR decisions, which provided Karelia with both the state autonomy, and the large extent of budgetary and economic independence. Since 1921 he was the Regional Executive Committee Chairman, from 1923 to 1935 he was the Soviet of People's Commissars of the KASSR Chairman. Restoration and expansion of the region in the 1920s and the beginning of the 1930s are related to Gyulling's name. E.Gyulling was subjected to the repression and rehabilitated posthumously in 1955.
Otto Kuusinen (1881-1964)
From 1940 to 1957 Otto Wilgelmovich Kuusinen was the Karelian-Finnish SSR Supreme Soviet Presidium Chairman. He was one of the founders of the republic defence during the Great Patriotic War and restoration of its national economy in the post-war period. Further he was the outstanding figure in the CPSU and the Soviet State.
Yuri Andropov (1914-1984)
Since 1940 Yuri Vladimirovich Andropov was the first secretary of the Central Committee of the YCL of the Karelian-Finnish SSR, in 1944 he became the second secretary of Petrozavodsk City Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (Bolsheviks) of the KFSSR, in 1947-51 he was the second secretary of the Central Committee of the C.P.S.U.(B.) of the KFSSR. Yuri Andropov was one of the founders of the underground resistance movement in the enemy's rear in Karelia during the Great Patriotic War and restoration of the national economy of the republic in the post-war period. Further he was the outstanding figure in the CPSU and the Soviet State.
