Petrozavodsk Becomes the Center of Sister-Cities Movement in the North-West of Russia

PETROZAVODSK, May 6 /The ITAR-TASS corr. Vladimir Zlobin/. An international meeting of representatives of sister-cities, dedicated to the city linkage development was held in Petrozavodsk. Delegations form Latvia, Norway, the USA, Finland, Sweden, and Russia participated in it.

The meeting was held within the frames of the international project "XXI century. Values and Harmony", worked out under participation of the Council of Ministers of northern countries and the Ministry of culture of the Republic of Karelia.

As Elena Ribalova, the Head of the friendship society "Karelia- Norway" told the ITAR-TASS correspondent, all the delegations agreed that sister-cities movement has played a very important role in establishment of mutually beneficial relations in economy and culture of the countries-participants.

Andrey Demin, Mayor of Petrozavodsk, backed the idea of the House of Friendship. It is supposed to be open in the capital of the Republic of Karelia, and might be the center of sister-cities movement in the North-West of Russia. Last updated: 10 May 2001
