Ministry of Foreign Affairs RF Values Cross-Border Cooperation Experience Accumulated by the Republic of Karelia

PETROZAVODSK, May, 10 /The ITAR-TASS corr. Vladimir Zlobin, Valery Lagutin/. Cross-border cooperation experience, accumulated in the Republic of Karelia was the main theme of the meeting of Igor Ivanov, Minister of Foreign Affairs RF and Sergey Katanandov, Head of the Government of the Republic of Karelia held in Petrozavodsk. As Sergey Katanandov told the ITAR-TASS correspondents, the Minister made a brief stop in Petrozavodsk on his way to Finland with an official visit. There he was going to make the arrangements for the visit of President Putin to Finland, scheduled for September.

"I appreciate cross-border relations between the Republic of Karelia and Finland in their true value. We really value them and consider them very promising," said Sergey Katanandov. "It's a priority for us. The proof of it is goods turnover between our territories which are the largest for the Republic of Karelia in comparison with other countries. (More than $100 mln annually). It would be enough to say that about 2 mln cubic meters of wood and timber were sent to Finland in 2000, which makes one third of the total volume of wood logging and processing in the republic."

As the Head of the Government put it, Finland is of great help to the republic in construction check-in points on the Russian-Finnish frontier. It makes the number of transit tourists growing. Last updated: 15 May 2001
