A Meeting of Northern Europe Parliamentarians in Petrozavodsk
On June, 15 the International conference "Cooperation of Northern Countries with North-West of the Russian Federation" was held in Petrozavodsk. It was set up by the State Duma of Russia, the Government of the Republic of Karelia, and the Northern Council.
The conference was open by the Sergey Katanandov, Head of the Government of the Republic of Karelia, Swen-Erick Hovmand, Head of the Northern Council, Artur Chilingarov, Deputy Head of the State Duma of Russia.
IN the course of the conference the following issues are to be discussed: the policy of "The Northern Dimension", new strategy of the North Council of cooperation with adjoining territories, "Cooperation in the field of environment and health", "Legislative and administrative potentials for investment to Russia."
Opening the conference, Sergey Katanandov said that the Republic of Karelia, being a subject of the Russian Federation strives to work in line of the Russian policy in the North. In particular, the republic is developing a set of projects within "The Northern Dimension" on a subregional level. Given the fact that integration processes are being developed in the European North, cross-border territories, including the Republic of Karelia are also interested in more active involving of the North-West of the Russian Federation
into European integration in the regions of the Baltic and Barents seas.
A. Chilingarov pointed out the interparliament relations of the State Duma with the Northern Council, the issues of cooperation of Russia and the Northern European countries, our vision of the relations with Baltic countries and Kaliningrad oblast. Finally, A. Chilingarov stated the fact that the Government of Russia had made a decision to establish State Commission for the issues of Arctic and Far North.
The conference will be closed on June 16.
