During the break in the sitting of the Regional Council of the Barents region, the Head of the Republic of Karelia Sergey Katanandov, just come from Moscow after the visit of the Russian delegation to Finland, conducted a breif press-conference, summing up his participation in the delegation activities.
Sergey Katanandov considers the visit a success: in the course of the visit the parties had discussed the not only the Russian-Finnish relations development, but also the problems of the European region in general. The most important issues for the Republic of Karelia was check-in points development on the Russian-Finnish border. Economic projects were also discussed during the meetings. "For our republic,"
the Head of the Republic pointed out, " the most important issue was to discuss the relashionships between loggers and wood-processors of Russia and Finland. These problems are to be discussed in the spring at the meeting of the Prome-Ministers of the two countires ". Sergey Katanandov was also very greatful to the Minister of Economic Development German Gref for his help in negotiations with the "Enso-Stura" concern. "I think, we have moved forward in solving this issue," Sergey Katanandov said. " At present we export about two cubic meters of round wood, part of it we could process in the republic. The negotiations of the enterprise construction are not easy, the Finnish party is discouraged by frequent changes in the Russian legislation, and I would like to express my gratitude to G. Gref for his help."
"This visit is of great importance for the Republic of Karelia, and certainly it will influence the development of the North-West region," the Head of the Republic of Karelia added. "Finland is a strategic partner of Russia, and it was confirmed in the course of the negotiations. A few agreements were signed, the regional problems were discussed, but the most important fact that the leaders of the two countries stated one more time that we could develop and solve the challenging problems hand in hand."
