April, 5 the enlarged session of the Learned Council of PetrSU with participation of the plenipotentiary of the President of Russia in the Northwest Federal District Victor Cherkessov, the Minister of Industry, Science and Technologies of the Russian Federation I.I.Klebanov, the Head of the Government of Karelia, deputies of the Legislative Assembly of the RK was held. The Rector of PetrSU Victor Vasiliev has told about the course of performance of the program of the university development. He has noted that the necessity for preparation of the plenty of highly skilled experts for the enterprises of Karelia, Murmansk region and, in part, of the Arkhangelsk region has increased recently. With this purpose the concept, in which PetrSU acts as the head training center was developed, and in the regions of the republic (Vepps national volost, Prionezhsky, Louhsky, Muezersky regions, Byelomorsk, and Kostomuksha) the branches of this educational institution have been established. Besides, the network of the base schools, technical schools and licea has appeared. For the past 4 years not only the number of students, but also the quality of their training has increased, and the spectrum of specialities has extended. Now in PetrSU there are 16 faculties and 72 chairs. Research work is accomplished: 28,5 million roubles was spent in 2001 for these purposes, 30 projects were carried out due to financing from various international funds. At the same time the lack of the educational areas, places in the dormitories, and the labware as well does not allow realizing the conceived in full.
"Petrozavodsk State University was always known in the country, and dynamics of its development has given the best impressions," - Ilya Klebanov has told. Victor Cherkessov has also noted the high reputation of PetrSU in the Northwest of Russia: "It is a pledge to the fact that there is a rich potential in Karelia. Russia accelerates its development, highly skilled experts are necessary, and it is important that the university develops at the same rates". The plenipotentiary of the President of the Russian Federation in the Northwest Federal District has declared that the Rector of PetrSU V.Vasiliev is awarded with the rank "The Honored Worker of the Higher School of the Russian Federation", has presented him with the mark, the certificate and has congratulated on the 65-th anniversary.
