Thousands of citizens of Petrozavodsk have walked on Saturday on streets and sque city to take part in celebrations devoted to the 300th anniversary of the city foundation. Official delegations from different regions of Russia and foreign sister cities have placed flowers on the monument to the founder of the capital of Karelia Peter the Great.
The central event of the holiday was opening the bronze monument to the first governor of Karelia, the great Russian poet and public figure Gavrila Derzhavin. The chairman of Council of Federation of the Russian Federation Sergey Mironov has taken part in the solemn ceremony. Within the day two more monuments presented to Petrozavodsk in honour of its anniversary by the government of Leningrad Region and the Finnish sister city of Joensuu were open in the city. First of them represents the young man, standing in the boat as a symbol of birth
of the city. The height of this sculpture of 7,5 meters, it is made of concrete and painted with bronze paint. The second monument is made in modern style and symbolizes friendship of two cities. It consists of two metal half-archs 4 meters in height connected above with a 'a spark of friendship'.
This day competition of sandy sculptures was held in Petrozavodsk, the second turn of quay of Onego Lake was solemnly opened, fair of national creativity was held, the All-Russian festival of national culture started. In streets and squares from morning till late night northerners sang, danced, drove round dances, participated in various competitions, and dramatized performances. The holiday continued on Sunday.
