Signing of the agreement

Today the Head of Karelia Sergey Katanandov and the Governor of Kaliningrad region Vladimir Egorov have signed the agreement on trade, economic, scientific, technical and cultural cooperation for 2003-2006.

Interest of two regions in development of bilaterial relations in the field of science, culture, education, public health services, sports other social spheres is declared in the agreement.

On the ceremony of signing Sergey Katanandov has noted that conclusion of the agreement corresponds with interests of the population and will promote strengthening of economy of our regions. The Head of Karelia has expressed his hope that henceforth inhabitants of the republic will pay attention to opening prospects of vacation in Kaliningrad region where the tourist industry develops dynamically. As an example, Sergey Katanandov has put the infrastructure of the known place of Kurshskaya spit. The Head of the Republic has especially noted that the consistent policy of the federal center and support of the Council of State of Russia on simplification of procedure of crossing the border with Lithuania play a key role in development of the most western territory of the Russian Federation.

The governor of Kaliningrad region Vladimir Egorov has paid attention of those who attended the ceremony of signing of the agreement to similar climatic and geographical conditions of two subjects of federation, and also identical problems in economy and frontier cooperation. Vladimir Egorov has especially noted necessity of development of fish branch of two regions (revision of system of fish quotas and updating of trawler fleet) and arrangement of boundary infrastructure.

The Republic of Karelia became the thirteenth region in Russia that concluded the agreement on cooperation with Kaliningrad region.
