Greeting the participants of the first Congress of timber merchants the Head of Karelia has paid attention to a number of serious problems interfering development of timber industrial complex of the republic. According to Sergey Katanandov, imperfection of the forest legislation, unsatisfactory preparation of qualified administrative personnel, and out-of-date equipment, in aggregate, does not promote effective development of wood resources of the region. Acceptance of the new Forest code should occur upon consultations in regions; the President of the Russian Federation also spoke about it. Only coordinated actions of authorities and timber merchants can change the economic situation for better, as the Head of Karelia has noted.

According to the Program of actions of the Government of the RK principles of policy and strategy of the Government in the sphere of forest management and development of timber industrial complex were determined.
The Congress ascertained, that due to the active position of the Government of the RK, Legislative Assembley of the RK, and actions of the Union of timber merchant the problem of turning raw material streams from external to the home market has moved forward. Deep processing of wood in the republic became a reality, instead of transcendental prospect.
Among acute problems the following were pointed out: imperfection of forest and tax legislations, weak development of the infrastructure of wood settlements and forest roads. The low level of salaries in the wood branch and unsatisfactory contribution of woodworking enterprises in the republican budget does not allow to adjust effective managing and development of the branch.
The Congress of timber merchants has decided to continue work on participation in perfection of the wood legislation and forest exploitation. It is necessary to create integrated structures of corporate management, leasing companies, new sawing and processing manufactures, and also to use scientific and technical potential of the RK.
