Prospects of the wood branch development have been discussed during the first congress of timber merchants of Karelia

PETROZAVODSK, April 20. /Correspondent of SPB-TASS Vladimir Zlobin/. Prospects of the wood branch of Karelia development were discussed in Petrozavodsk by representatives of the branch at the first congress of timber merchants of the northern republic. Heads and experts of the Union of timber merchants and timber-exporters of Russia, regional departments and committees of the wood complex of the Northwest federal district, committee of the State Duma of the Russian Federation on natural resources and nature management, the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation have taken part in its work.

"The timber industry is on the threshold of the main recesses related to the forthcoming acceptance of new edition of the Forest code, - the Head of Karelia Sergey Katanandov has told opening the congress. - One of these days the President of Russia has declared that it is impossible to pass it without consultations of experts, scientists, and representatives of wood regions of the country. Now the project is under elaboration. Thereupon I want to emphasize the importance of this congress. I suppose, our collective opinion will promote acceptance of the reasonable solution of this problem."

In its decision the congress has stated the problem of maintenance of economically effective and ecologically safe development of wood riches as a priority task. Participants of the meeting have defined development of wood settlements, their life-support, creation of new manufactures there, and decrease of the rate of unemployment as immediate tasks.
