New transport corridor Barents Link will pass through northern provinces of Norway, Sweden and Finland, and also Karelia, Archangelsk region, the Republic of Komi, to Komi-Perm autonomous region and Perm region, as NA REGNUM correspondent informs.
The trunk-railway of the extent over 3 thousand kilometers will connect the Norwegian port of Narvik and the Russian city of Perm, and will promote industrial development of remote areas of the European North of Russia.
As the representative of administration of the Swedish provence of Västebotten Maria Andersson has informed at the session of the regional Council of the Barents Euro-Arctic Region in Petrozavodsk, realization of the project will demand significant financial investments in electrification and modernization of existing railways according to standards of axial loading of 25 tons, construction of missing sites of the way and expansion of railway terminals on the entire extent of the trunk-railway. Participants of the meeting did not count up expenses, but, in the opinion of some experts, the volume of investments in Barents Link creation will make billions of euros.
It is planned to commission the new transport corridor completely within 20 years. However, in the nearest years within the framework of Barents Link project it is planned to finish electrification of Ledmozero-Kochkoma railway, to expand the wood terminal in Kivijarvi, and to construct the new container and wood terminal on the Karelian site of the Russian-Finnish border.
