PETROZAVODSK, June 7. /Correspondent of ITAR-TASS Yuri Shleikin/. Karelia demonstrates its achievements for the 85th anniversary of its statehood. It is one of the Russian regions developing most dynamically. It has been declared today by the Head of Karelia Sergey Katanandov in his interview to the ITAR-TASS correspondent on the eve of the anniversary of the republic.
The Head of Karelia has noted, that in the past year the highest in recent years growth of industrial production of 109,3% has been achieved, that exceeds the average Russian parameter. Among scale projects the Head of the republic has mentioned production reconstructions in Kondopoga and Segezha, input of a gas main Petrozavodsk - Kondopoga in operation, development of Karelsky Okatysh (Karelian Iron-Ore Pellets) mining enterprize , construction of a new series of cargo steam-ships of the "river - sea" class, completing electrification of Octyabrskaya railway.
"The population of Karelia makes approximately one half percent of the population of out country, that is about 700 thousand people, but we are proud that 35% of newprint produced in Russia, and 22% of iron-ore pellets fall on the share of the republic. The timber branch, metallurgy, engineering industry, stone-working will in many respects define development of the region further," - Sergey Katanandov has told.
"Karelia is the epos of Kalevala and culture of Finno-Ugric peoples, masterpieces of wooden architecture on Kizhi island and spiritual light of Valaam monastery. We appreciate this heritage of our land of forests, lakes and midnight sun," - the Head of the republic has noted.
On June 8, 1920 the Karelian labour commune has been founded. Since this day the republic has its national-state status, it has its coat of arms, the flag and and the anthem.
