The Republic of Karelia celebrates the 85 anniversary of its statehood

PETROZAVODSK, June 8. /Correspondent of ITAR-TASS Yuri Shleikin/. Petrozavodsk hosts celebrations devoted to the 85th anniversary of the Republic of Karelia.

As the Minister of Culture of the republic Galina Brun has told the SPB-TASS correspondent, at the solemn assembly the Head of Karelia Sergey Katanandov will hand over the regional premium Sampo to workers of literature and art, and also diplomas and signs of The Honourable Citizen of Karelia. In the year of the 60th anniversary of the Victory this rank has been given to two front-line-veteran soldiers Nikolay Apushkin and Vasily Barsukov for their military and labour feats.

The holiday program includes international folk music festival Kantele, opening of the exhibition devoted to the history of Karelian fairs, a fish festival, the final of youth military-patriotic game Emulation of the Victory, and a concert of the opera stage star Galina Gorchakova. For the first time on the Day of the Republic celebrated for the 7th time, a huge Karelian fair has been organized in the city centre where enterprises from St.-Petersburg, Archangelsk, Veliky Novgorod, Kirov and other cities of Russia have brought their goods.

Karelia where about 700 thousand people of almost hundred nationalities live is now one of the most dynamically developing regions of the country. Rates of growth of manufacture in the past year have exceeded the average level in Russia.
