Euroregions ''should become points of growth in the economics of Russia,'' chairman of the Federation Council's CIS Affairs Committee considers

PETROZAVODSK, June 29. /Correspondent of SPB-TASS Yuri Shleikin/. Euroregions "should become points of growth in the economics of Russia," Vadim Gustov, chairman of the Federation Council's CIS Affairs Committee considers.

He has taken part in th exit session of the committee devoted to prospects of development of international frontier regional communities /euroregions/, as well as activization of frontier communications of neighbouring regions of the Republic of Karelia and Finland.

"The purpose of meeting in Petrozavodsk is to watch the development if the Euro-region Karelia, the first of stipulated by the agreement between governments of Russia and Finland," - Vadim Gustov has told to the ITAR-TASS correspondent. In the second half of the year a law On Frontier Cooperation of the Russian Federation should be passed, and "it is important for us to see and understand, whether norms that will make for development of euroregions are explained there thoroughly," the senator has noted.

"Euroregions should become points of growth in the economics of Russia and remain in the focus of attention of the government of the Russian Federation," Vadim Gustov has declared. As he said, "a mechanism to solve of problems of their infrastructure, such as roads, communication, and frontier check points is necessary."

Nine subjects of the Russian Federation and more than 30 municipal formations of the country participate in frontier communities. Within the framework of euroregions frontier cooperation with Finland, Ukraine, Poland, Latvia, Lithuania is carried out, and relations with Belarus become stronger.
