On October 3, 2006 the second Russian-Finnish economic forum will open in Petrozavodsk. Organizers of the forum are Council of the Federation of the Federal Assembly of Russia, Parliament of Finland and Provincial Board of Oulu. Representatives of the Russian and foreign business circles, members of the parliaments, heads of federal and regional enforcement authorities, experts, scientists and public figures are invited for participation in the forum.
On the threshold of the event session of the organizational committee of the forum took place in Petrozavodsk on June, 5. The vice-president of Council of the Federation Mikhail Nikolayev, the Head of Karelia Sergey Katanandov, the Governor of the Finnish province of Oulu Eino Siurainen and other responsible persons have taken part in the session of organizing committee.
Opening session of the organizing committee, Sergey Katanandov has told that hosting this significant international event is a great honor and responsibility for Karelia and Petrozavodsk. The Head of Karelia has supported Mikhail Nikolayev's thesis that the forthcoming forum should be filled with concrete actions aimed at development of economic cooperation between Finland and regions of the Northwest of Russia. It is planned to date signing of several mutually advantageous contracts and to declare the launching of some frontier projects for the forum.
At the session of the organizational committee the preliminary program of the forthcoming forum has been offered and discussed. Various themes for discussion are supposed to be united into the following thematic blocks: cooperation in the sphere of innovative technologies, economic cooperation, cooperation in the sphere of logistics and transport. Also during the forum it is planned to a hold session of the club of rectors of Northern and Arctic institutes of higher education and a parliamentary seminar.
In turn, Eino Siurainen has suggested to add discussion of opportunities of development of tourism in northern sparsely populated territories of both countries and problems of ecology to the agenda of the forthcoming forum.
