S.Katanandov addresses to participants of the IX Congress of Finno-Ugric Writers

The IX Interstate Ņongress of Finno-Ugric Writers - Writer - Literature - Reader passes in the capital of Karelia from September 26 to 29.

Famous writers, poets, journalists, scientific, public figures, representatives of federal and republican authorities, foreign countries and regions of Russia take part in work of the congress.

Participants of the congress discuss the broad range of aspects related to condition and prospects of development of literature and journalism in national languages.

In three literary associations of Karelia there are more than sixty poets, prose writers, playwrights and literary critics writing in national languages. For the last 15 years in the republic there had been published more than 150 books and brochures in Karelian, Finnish and Vepsian languages. A series of Classics of Karelian Literature, the collection of young beginning authors Young Karelia will be published in the near future.

In his statement the Head of Karelia Sergey Katanandov has noted that every nation has the right to count on assistance and support of the state, as it aspire to preserve its language, ethnic and cultural originality, especially under conditions of the headily changing modern world.

Sergey Katanandov has emphasized that at financial support of the state four newspapers and two magazines are published in Karelia in Karelian, Finnish and Vepsian languages, and the personnel structure of national editorial staffs is kept.

In conclusion of his statement, the head of Karelia has expressed hope that the Congress will allow all of its participants both to understand each other better, and to realize serious responsibility of writers and products they create in education of tolerant consciousness, in strengthening international and interstate communications.
