NA REGNUM. Frontier cooperation is a competitive advantage of the Northwest Federal District and revels additional opportunities for development of the region.
It was declared by Plenipotentiary of the President of the Russian Federation in the NWFD Ilya Klebanov who addressed the second annual international conference Frontier Cooperation of the Russian Federation and the European Union which opened on Thursday, on September, 28th in Petrozavodsk.
According to Ilya Klebanov, the district has a unique geopolitic position: 5 subjects of the federation border upon the EU countries overland and three subjects border upon the EU countries by sea. Such favourable position in many respects caused successful development of frontier cooperation, both on municipal, and on inter-regional levels. Among the most successful examples of frontier cooperation between the Russian Federation and the EU Klebanov has called experience of mutual relations of Southeast Finland with St.Petersburg, Leningrad region and Karelia.
As the Plenipotentiary has noted, the major problem of frontier cooperation is development of territorial infrastructure in the field of transport, ecology, and tourism. Ilya Klebanov has expressed hope, that the law on frontier cooperation passed in Russia will promote the further strengthening of business and cultural cooperation between the Russian Federation and the EU.
