On February 19, Head of Karelia Sergey Katanandov and Chief Federal Inspector in the Republic of Karelia Valentin Shmykov have made a working trip to Lahdenpohja. The main event of the visit was start-up of the new industrial line on Bumex Lahdenpohja plywood mill.

Collective of the industrial complex gathered for the solemn start-up of the new line, upon which start economic situation of the enterprise should improve fundamentally. As the Bumex, Ltd., president Mikhail Belyayev says, the project has been implemented within three years. As a result of cooperation of combine with Finnish company Raute in Lahdenpohja there has been constructed the fastest in the world rotary cut veneer production line: during its testing engineers have reached a record parameter of veneer production - 365 meters a minute.

The new line costs about €4 million and will allow to double company's turnover. On its productivity the line in 2.5 times surpasses available facilities of the enterprise. Veneer sheet will be delivered to Finland. According to heads of Bumex, though only 2 operators will work at the line, in the near future the wages of all workers of the industrial complex will grow considerably, it will lead to improvement of social and economic conditions in the region.

In turn, Sergey Katanandov has noted that the entire timber industry complex of Karelia will receive positive economic benefit – the industrial complex uses great volumes of birch which processing was not arranged properly in the republic till recently.

Development of Lahdenpohja was also mentioned at other Sergey Katanandov's meetings with residents of the region. In particular, Head of Karelia has visited high school N1 where he met with senior students and teachers. Within the scope of the national project Education the school received 1 million roubles of a grant to purchase computers, visual aids, new furniture and books. The school teacher of history and social science Svetlana Kontsevaнa was awarded a 100 thousand roubles premium for her excellent work.

Two years ago a swimming pool opened in the school after reconstruction. The school swimming finals was timed to coincide with the visit of the Head of the republic. Sergey Katanandov himself is a good swimmer, and he was excited to watch the competition and award winners.

At the Family and Morals round table discussion in local administration matters concerned support of family, motherhood and childhood. It was symbolic that before the beginning of the round table Sergey Katanandov has congratulated Mr and Mrs Isayev on their golden wedding. Tamara and Alexey have been living 50 years together in the settlement of Esterlo, keeping their house and being held in deserved honour and respect of thier fellow-villagers.

Many a time at meetings in Lahdenpohja it was discussed in what direction to develop to the region further: whether it is possible to live on the coast of Ladoga only due to tourism, whether the national park will be created, whether it is necessary to place new industrial enterprises here. Sergey Katanandov has told, that the plan of social and economic development of the region is being elaborated in the republic, St.-Petersburg Institute of Urbanistics makes the plan of possible location of industrial enterprisesin the region, and that, at last, decision on creation of a National park in Ladoga lakeside will be made soon. These documents and decisions will define further ways of Lahdenpohja region development and their preliminary discussion with the population will allow to take into account all interests of local residents at most.
