Unknown petroglyphs discovered on the east coast of Onego lake in Karelia

PETROZAVODSK, August 4. /Correspondent of SPB-TASS Sergey Kulikayev/. On the east coast of Onego lake in Karelia archeologists have found a set new unknown rock carvings - petroglyphs.

In the opinion of the famous Karelian archeologist Alexander Zhulnikov, the unique discovering made in the end of this July during the expedition, is of world value. Near to already studied Onego petroglyphs, archeologists have found one more rock spotted with a set of hitherto unknown rock carvings. Concervative assumptions are being made that the discovered petroglyphs together with already known can make an ancient observatory. Now it is considered, that the most ancient of known observatories is dated the second century B.C. whereas the one found in Karelia is dated 4-5 centuries earlier.

Participants of the expedition have made panoramic shootings and measurements of the discovered rock carvings. Together with scientists from the Moscow Institutes of Archeology and Astrology it is necessary to make calculations and prove, that Onego petroglyphs represent an ancient observatory.

The ancient archeologic object of rock carvings - Onego petroglyphs - has been discovered in 1848 and totals approximately 1200 figures. Of all petroglyphs discovered in Karelia researchers managed to decipher less than one half. If figures of people and animals do not cause doubts, than set of others rock signs till now cause disputes of scientists. Some of them consider, that ancient people have represented the Moon and the Sun, other scientists assume, that unidentified flying objects are represented on the rocks. Unlike scientists, local residents considered rock figures as an emanation of an evil spirit.

Value of Karelian petroglyphs is comparable to such monuments of literature and architecture, as the world famous Karelian-Finnish epos Kalevala and Kizhi ensemble of the XVIII-XIX centuries on the Kizhi island of Onego lake.
