A memorial to the Siberian soldiers called in from Altai and killed in fights in Reboly thrust in September, 1941, will open on September 7 in the village of Rugozero of Muezersky region of the Republic of Karelia.
In the end of August, 1941 Reboly thrust of Karelian front there were intense defensive battles on approaches to the village of Rugozero. Troops of the 27 rifle division exhausted by two months of continuous fights, sustained greater losses, hardly constraining attacking divisions of the 14th infantry division of Finns. On September 1 there came the Siberian battalion with 1021 soldiers to support the 27 division, in the morning on September 7 they have joined the fight. The enemy has been stopped, despite of preponderance of its force, that has allowed troops of the division to avoid surrounding and withdraw in an orderly manner to the prepared holding line.
Remains of Altay soldiers will be buried on the rural cemetery on September 7. The memorial to the fallen heroes will open in solemn atmosphre. At the ceremony there will be a delegation from Altay territory, which includes relatives of victims, searchers, journalists, representatives of executive authority of the region.
Worthy perpetuating of memories of soldiers from Altai in Karelia is organized under the initiative of the citizen of Barnaul, engaged in searchin since 1984.
"Searching for the information on my father who was missing since 1941, brought her to the archive where she has managed to receive information that her father was lost and buried in a communal grave in the village of Rugozero. Having visited to Karelia, the lady has learned about the memorial established in this village in honour of victims of the battle of September 7, 1941. However, names of only 78 Altay soldiers were written on the monument, and after other relatives of other Altay soldiers killed in Karelia have joined the searching, information about 178 citizens of Altay territory have been found," - the agency informs.
Until recently search groups of Altay territory, Karelia, Moscow, buried the remains of soldiers they found in anonymous communal graves on the rural cemetery. Now names of all the fallen soldiers of Altai will be immortalized on the memorial.
From Altay territory relatives of victims, representatives of the Altay regional committee of war and military service veterans, experts of Altai ministry of social protection, military commissariat of Altay territory, etc., participated in work on perpetuating of memory of their fellow countrymen. On behalf of Karelia there worked representatives of the museum of the 27 rifle division in Petrozavodsk, Karelian branch of the Russian Peace Fund international public foundation, enforcement authorities of Karelia.
