In 2009 Karelia will become the center of youth movement of Finno-Ugric peoples

International Finno-Ugric Student Conference (IFUSCO) is held annually in various Finno-Ugric countries and regions of the Russian Federation. The conference is the most significant student's conference devoted to research of Finno-Ugric languages and cultures. It gives its participants an excellent opportunity to meet with colleagues, discuss aspects of research in the field of Finno-Ugric languages and cultures, and get an insight into this field of knowledge in other countries. Conference annually gathers no less than 300 undergraduate and post-graduate students, Ph.D. students and young people interested in Finno-Ugric languages and cultures. Students of the Republic of Karelia traditionally take part in the IFUSCO conference and represent the republic properly. Repeatedly Petrozavodsk students became prize-winners, their theses were included in special collection of reports.

In 2007 the TRIAS Karelian youth public organization initiated carrying out of the XXVth anniversary of the IFUSCO student's conference in the Republic of Karelia. This issue was discussed at the session of the Council of representatives of Karelians, Veppsians and Finns of the Republic of Karelia at the Head of the Republic of Karelia in May, 2007. The initiative of carrying out the IFUSCO conference in Karelia was supported by the Head of the Republic Sergey Katanandov, Ministry on National Politics and Relations with Religious Associations of the Republic of Karelia, Institute of Language, Literature and History of Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences, leaders of republican Finno-Ugric public associations. In May, at the XXIVth IFUSCO held in Helsinki, the Republic of Karelia demonstrated very good preparation: members of the delegation presented scientific reports, project ideas and literary works within the scope of all directions of work of the conference; presentation of Petrozavodsk, as a capital of the following XXVth anniversary of IFUSCO was held; letters of support from the Government of the Republic of Karelia and Petrozavodsk State University have been presented to the steering committee. Participants of the conference have approved Petrozavodsk as a capital of the following conference to be held in May, 2009.

In August, 2009 it is also planned to carry out the congress of the Youth Association of Finno-Ugric people (MAFUN) in Petrozavodsk, which work is aimed at consideration of issues of preservation, development, propagation of Finno-Ugric languages and cultures, creations of conditions for self-realization and assistance to growth of national consciousness of Finno-Ugric youth, protection of political, social, economic, national and cultural rights of the Finno-Ugric peoples.

Now at the Ministry on National Politics and Relations with Religious Associations of the Republic of Karelia working groups on organization and carrying out of IFUSCO conference and MAFUN congress are being created. They will include representatives of bodies of the government, organizations and establishments, leaders of national public associations of Karelians, Veppsians and Finns.
