A new traffic sign on the island

This year under the initiative of the Ministry of Construction of the Republic of Karelia and at active cooperation with the administration of the Valaam Monastery of Transfiguration of the Saviour, large scope of work was performed on the road system of the island.
For safety traffic participants and constantly growing stream of visitors of the monastery new traffic signs were established. Works have been performed in view of specific conditions of the island and original constructions were applied for support of traffic signs.
Repair of the Stone bridge on the island of Valaam

Stone bridge located on the 3rd km of the Main monastic road (its extent makes 5.7 km) has undergone capital repair. Feature of this project was that without changing the design of the existing bridge constructed in 1867 it was necessary to provide safety of traffic participants. Therefore, considering requirements on protection of monuments of history and culture, modern ferro-concrete constructions were used at projecting. Besides, on the 4th km of the Main monastic motorway repair of the wooden bridge was performed.

Considering wishes of the Valaam Monastery administration, and the fact that guests and visitors of the island prefer to travel by feet, dedusting of regional roads of Valaam was performed. These works were carried out in contact to representatives of Road district of Savo-Karjala region (Finland). By the way, two years ago similar experiment with use of calcium chloride was completed on a site of one of motorways in Sortavala region. The experiment has shown, that public roads with gravel surfacing can be made convenient, and also more safe and comfortable for the traffic participants.
All actions were carried out by forces of experts and equipment of Sortavala Maintenance Depot state unitary enterprise, supervised by Mubariz Kazymov.
Considering the fact that works performed on the island were quite unusual, Ministry of Construction of the RK has held a special seminar on the basis of Sortavala Maintenance Depot with visiting Valaam, examination and discussion of the order and type of measures undertaken there. Heads of the road enterprises of Karelia, representatives of the Automobile Roads Department of the RK official body, Road district of region Savo-Karjala (Finland) and the Valaam Monastery of Transfiguration of the Saviour participated in the seminar.
Participants of the seminar have noted high quality of the job done, discussed in detail technology and mechanism of using experience of road builders from Sortavala.
It is necessary to note, that road builders from other regions of Russia became interested in the experience of public gravel roads' maintenance. Thus, this month colleagues from Yakutia came to Karelia to study this experience.
