Petrozavodsk athletes at the international competition among twin-cities

The 19th competition Neubrandenburger Tollenseseelauf was held on June 20 in Neubrandenburg (Germany). This is international competition among twin-cities. Russia was represented by four Karelian runners Alexey Smirnov, Nina Koloskova, Vladimir Tetin and Alexander Vologdina.

The record number of sportsmen took part in the competition this year - 1003 participants from the Philippines, Ecuador, Argentina, Germany, England, France, Russia (Petrozavodsk). Medals were awarded in marathon, semi-marathon and 10-kilometer distance. The cross-country race was run in 30C heat.

Alexey Smirnov who was representing the Encashment Association of Russia became the absolute winner on the 10-kilometer distance. He has run it at 33 minutes. Alexey was only 9 seconds short of the track record. Struggle for victory was tough. 400 meters before the finish Petrozavodsk runner competed with the German athlete, and proved to be a greater stayer. Another German sportsman has won the third place. This was the third victory of Alexey Smirnov at the competition in Neubrandenburg. He had already returned to Petrozavodsk with victory in 2005 and 2006.

An athlete from Petrozavodsk, former skier, Nina Koloskova has also won the first place in the competition in her age category (50 years). The winners also are Petrozavodsk runner, The Sports-Racing Union club chairman Vladimir Tetin. He has participated in the competition for men at the age of 55 years. Another Petrozavodsk athlete, 16-year-old Alexandra Vologdina, was the third on the 10-kilometer distance. It is necessary to note, that the winner, athlete from France, has run the distance in 48 minutes. Last year the best result was 38 minutes. Alexandra Vologdina has yielded only one minute to the leader, having won the third place.

Petrozavodsk sportsmen have been invited to this competition for a few years in succession. The athletes appreciate cordial welcome of the German party, their special thanks to Jörg Knopse, organizer and chairman of SV Turbine racing club, Frau Scheller and interpreter Sabina Buscher.
