Head of the republic has approved a new date in history of the republic — the Day of Karelia's Liberation

Head of Karelia Sergey Katanandov has signed the Law of the Republic of Karelia On Establishing the Day of Karelia's Liberation from Fascist Aggressors. The law has been introduced by the Head of the republic in the Legislative Assembly of the RK in responce to numerous requests from public organizations of veterans of the Great Patriotic War, and has been passed by the Karelian parliament on June 15, 2009. The law establishes September 30 a red-letter day.

In Summer of 1944 year significant victories of the Red Army at different fronts and successful work of the rear of the country have created necessary conditions for liberating Karelia from fascist aggressors. Leningrad and Karelian fronts in interaction with the Baltic fleet, Ladoga and Onego military flotillas, have attacked the enemy resolutely. Soviet army has liberated Vyborg, Olonets, Suojärvi, and on June 28 the Soviet forces, together with the troops landed by the Onego flotilla, have liberated Petrozavodsk. The Kirov railway and the White Sea-Baltic Channel — the important communications connecting the Far North with the central areas of the country have been returned.

In September of the same year liberation of northern Karelia has begun. On September 17, in whirlwind attack destroying defensive posts of the enemy, its weapon emplacements, anti-tank and anti-personnel fortifications, the pre-war line of the border was reached by the troops of the 26th army, and on September 30, on its site — by the troops of the 19th army of the Karelian front. Thus, the territory of Karelia has been completely liberated from fascist aggressors.
