The conference in Pryazha

On July 22, Pryazha hosted a conference focused on discussion of aspects of preservation and development of national languages, traditions and cultures of Baltic and Finnish peoples of Pryazha national region. The conference was initiated by institutions of local government on results of the VIth Congress of Karelians of the Republic of Karelia held in June.

Heads and experts of establishments of education, culture, deputies of the regional council, heads and experts of administration of the region and settlements and the public at large have taken part in the conference. The conference guests and active participants also were representatives of bodies of the government - Ministry of the Republic of Karelia on National Politics and Relations with Religious Associations, Ministry of Education of the Republic of Karelia, state enterprises and establishments — Periodika Publishing house, Center of National Cultures of the Republic, heads and members of national public associations.

Head of administration of Pryazha national region Konstantin Gusev has told about work on preservation and development of Karelian and Finnish languages, traditional culture of Karelians in territory of the region. Director of Essoila palace of culture, member of the Authorized Council of the VIth Congress of Karelians Gennady Lukin has suggested to consider representation of Karelians and Finns in institutions of local government of Pryazha national region.

The conference considered urgent issues of preservation of the ethnic identity of Karelians, increase of public importance of Karelian language, creation of vital language environment in families, teaching young generation to respect traditions and customs of their ancestors. Participants are confident of the necessity to provide continuity in Karelian language studying in educational establishments of the region, activization of cultural education for popularization of national language and culture of Karelians in rural settlements, among parents.

Resolution of the conference will be published both in Russian and Karelian languages in the regional newspaper Our Life - Mijan Elaigu.
