A meeting with partners from Finland representing National Institute of Health and Social Well-Being of Finland and National Public Health Center of North Carelia was held on February, 1 in the Ministry of Health and Social Development of the Republic of Karelia. Purpose of the meeting was discussion of issues of current cooperation and definition of further cooperation prospects.
The Finnish delegation was led by Director General of the National Institute of Health and Social Well-Being of Finland Pekka Puska and chairman of the board of the Public Health Center of North Carelia Pertti Puhakka. From the Russian party, except for heads and experts of the ministry, in the meeting there have also participated chief of social and economic directorate of Administration of the Head of the RK Klara Shevchenko and deputy of the Legislative Assembly of the RK, vice-president of the Budget Committee Mikhail Ukhanov.
The history of cooperation between the National Institute of Health and Social Well-Being of Finland and its Russian partners numbers already more than 15 years during which in territory of Northwest of Russia there have been implemented 39 projects, one half from them – in the Republic of Karelia.
At the moment cooperation between the Ministry, National Institute of Health and Social Well-Being of Finland and the National Public Health Center of North Carelia is carried out within the scope of the Cooperation Agreement for 2007-2010 according to which there goes scientific research, training of experts and practical activities directed on prevention of diseases and strengthening of health of the population on both sides of the border.
Almost ten years of fruitful cooperation unites the National Public Health Center of North Carelia and Pitkäranta central regional hospital. The project of Health Promotion and Prevention of Basic Noninfectious Diseases Among the Population of Pitkäranta Region of the Republic of Karelia has a special place.
The novelty of international cooperation between the Ministry and the National Public Health Center of North Carelia became the From Knowledge – to Action project launched in 2008. The project pursues several purposes: formation of healthy lifestyle among the residents of Karelia; increase of information awareness of the population about the state of health; strengthening of mutual influence of the authority, mass media, public organizations and citizens.
As for the prospects of cooperation, since 2010 the Ministry plans to launch the Prevention of HIV-infection Among the Female Population of the Republic of Karelia for 2010-2012 project at participation of National Institute of Health and Social Well-Being of Finland.
It is supposed, that development of telemedical network which is an innovation direction of international cooperation will be continued. Last year the Ministry together with the Public Health Center of North Carelia has developed the new project of Telemedicine Development in the Republic of Karelia for 2010-2012.
Traditionally, within the scope of cooperation with the National Institute of Health and Social Well-Being of Finland and the National Public Health Center of North Carelia Days of Medicine are held biennially. According to joint plans, the XIth Days of Medicine will be held in October, 2010 in Finland.
