Council of Karelians, Veppsians and Finns

On February 18, 2010 the first this year session of the Council of representatives of Karelians, Veppsians and Finns of the Republic of Karelia under the Head of the Republic of Karelia was held in Petrozavodsk.
Members of the Council, representatives of national public associations of Karelians, Veppsians and Finns, establishments of education, science, culture, Legislative Assembly, bodies of the government, representatives of administration of Pryazha and Kalevala national regions and Prionezhsky region, Veppsian rural settlement of Shoksha, mass media have taken part in the session.
A report on results of implementation of the state national policy, state and confessional relations in territory of the Republic of Karelia in 2009 and guidelines for 2010 was made by the Minister of the Republic of Karelia on National Politics and Relations with Religious Associations Andrey Manin.
Alexander Kulichenko, Deputy Head of administration of Pryazha region for Social Issues, has informed participants of the session on implementation of some ethnosocial and ethnocultural activities initiated by institutions of local government in territory of the region.
Heads of public associations of Veppsians and Finns Zynaida Strogalshchikova and Vadim Byurkland have told about important actions of their societies in 2009 and plans for 2010.
A geat gift for inhabitants of our land on the year of the 90th anniversary of formation of the Republic of Karelia is publication of the Russian-Karelian dictionary in Livvic dialect, and its author Tatyana Boiko, chairlady of the Livvic subcommittee of the Republic's Terms and Spelling Commission at the Head of the Republic of Karelia, has shared experience on its compiling.
Having heard and discussed all speakers' reports, members of the Council have paid special attention to the budgetary target program of the State Support for Karelian, Vepsian and Finnish of Languages in the Republic of Karelia in 2006-2010 which expires this year.
One of the issues on the agenda was discussion of results of work of the Ist Congress of Indigenous Peoples of the Barents Region held on February 4 and 5 in Kirkines, Norway. The Congress has considered participation of representatives of every indigenous people in all supreme organs of the Barents cooperation including Barents and Regional Councils. Delegation of the Veppsian Culture Society has also taken part in the international conference Coexistence in the Arctic Regions which has discussed issues of mutual relations between indigenous people and industrial companies operating in territories of their primordial residing.
Session of the joint working body was concluded by discussion of the Plan of operation of the Council in 2010.
