The Petrozavodskmash's black oil pipeline failure occured in the morning of July, 4; as a result, oil products got into rainwater disposal and further to the bank of Petrozavodsk bay of Lake Onego near the berth of Petrozavodskmash JSC.
By efforts of the enterprise, city autority and services of the republic measures to prevent Lake Onego pollution with oil products were organized immediately. Slick bars have been provided, collection of oil products in the coastal territory is held continuously.
According to the State Committee of the RK for Life Support and Safety of Population, currently the situation remains stable, the black oil patch is localized securely. By the afternoon of July, 6 it has been collected about one half of oil products. The coastline is cleaned from oil-polluted objects and garbage. Cleaning of coastal ground has started. Collection of emulsion from the surface of the water area surrounded by slick bars continues with the help of special equipment involved.
In the afternoon of July, 6 specialists of the Monitoring, Emergency Works and Firefighting Service, Ltd., rescue unit came to Petrozavodsk from St.-Petersburg to make assessment of the situation and render necessary assistance. They have assessed the measures taken and the course of works positively.
Most of the oil products collecting and clearing of the coastal territory is supposed to be done by the end of this week.
The ñourse of works is supervised by the Acting Head of the Republic of Karelia Andrei Nelidov in person. He receives reports on the course of works every two hours.
