On July, 9 Chairman of the State Committee of the RK for Life Support and Safety of Population Nikolai Fedotov has travelled to the place where oil products spilt on the shore of the Lake Onego.

Let us remind, that on July, 4 as a result of technological failure at Petrozavodskmash JSC, oil products got into rainwater disposal and further to the bank of Petrozavodsk bay of Lake Onego. However, due prompt and well co-ordinated actions of Petrozavodskmash, city services and forces of the Ministry of Emergency it was possible to avoid eco-catastrophe and to prevent pollution of water area.

Nikolai Fedotov has told the journalists about the course of works and has shown their results. By now almost all the oil products are cleaned from the water area surrounded by slick bars. The shore of the lake is completely cleaned of oil-polluted objects and garbage, stones on the shore are washed, polluted sand is replaced. The next work in the queue is cleaning of the sewer pipe and final reclaiming of the shore.

Some iridescence still remains on the water surface. This emulsion will be also destroyed by special reagents which, according to Nikolai Fedotov, are certified and are absolutely safe for environment and humans.
Nikolai Fedotov praised everyone who participated in the accident management, and especially employees of Petrozavodskmash JSC, thanks to whom the accident consequences were minimized. According to Nikolai Fedotov, about 60 people were involved in continuous works to clean the shore of the lake.
Even after the water and the shore undergo complete treatment, the slick bars will not be removed – just in case. The State Committee will watch this territory carefully for another month after the work is over. At the same time there goes the accident investigation, ascertainment of the guilty and determination of their liabilities.
