The Republic of Karelia takes active part in development of Finno-Ugric literature

The XI International congress of Finno-Ugric writers continues its work, and delegation from the Republic of Karelia takes part in it. Matias Kastren's Society is the main organizer of the Congress.

On Thursday, August 26, in the conference hall of the University of Oulu there has been heeld a plenary session where papers were presented by writers famous in Finno-Ugric literary community from Finland, Hungary, Sweden, Russia.

Within the framework of the forum there has been held a board meeting of Association of Finno-Ugric writers where Finnish writer Kari Sallamaa was elected a new chairman. Before that for 14 years the association was headed by Estonian poet Arvo Valton. Karelian delegation at the session was represented by a member of the board, poet and translator Alexander Volkov.

During work of the congress there opened a book exhibition where our republic was represented by Periodika publishing house. Participants and guests of the literary forum have got acquainted with book novelties, newspapers and magazines in Karelian, Veppsian and Finnish languages. Publishing houses from other countries and regions of Russia also presented a variety of books. Publishing houses and literary unions of Hungary and Estonia, among other editions, have presented released this summer collections of poems by Nikolay Abramov, Veppsian poet from Karelia, who was also a participant of the congress.

Famous Karelian rock group Santtu Karhu and Talvisovat performed for the delegates.

On August, 27 participants from Karelia presented their papers at workshop sessions.

Meetings of Finno-Ugric writers at Congresses are held in alternate years. In 2006 the Republic of Karelia welcomed writers writing in Finno-Ugric languages.

Participation of representatives from Karelia is supported by the Ministry of the Republic of Karelia on National Politics and Relations with Religious Associations according to the plan of activities for implementation of the regional target program of the state support of Karelian, Veppsian and Finnish languages in the Republic of Karelia in 2006-2010.
