Head of Karelia has a meeting with the delegation of the Regional State Administrative Agency for Eastern Finland

Delegation of the Regional State Administrative Agency for Eastern Finland was on a three-day working visit to Karelia. A meeting with Head of Karelia Alexander Khudilainen within the scope of the visit took place on August, 22.

Cooperation between the republic and the region of Eastern Finland was established more than 20 years ago during which time it has been developing successfully. One year ago a new page of this cooperation opened when the memorandum was signed on results of negotiations between the Government of Karelia and the Regional State Administrative Agency for Eastern Finland and cooperation in new spheres become more active.

Topical issues of life-sustaining activity in the neighbour territories and prospects of cooperation were discussed during the meeting.

One of the matters of the most concernment for both parties today is development and arrangement of border-crossing checkpoints. According to Head of Karelia Alexander Khudilainen, the republic has submitted its application to The State Border of the Russian Federation federal program concerning inclusion of construction of the new international automobile checkpoint Syväoro-Parikkala into it.

– We hope that our offers will be taken into account, and Syväoro checkpoint will be constructed according to modern requirements in 2015-2016. This object is of primary importance for us considering that a new direct high-speed road between St.Petersburg and the state border that will reach Sortavala in 2016 is under construction now, – Head of Karelia emphasized.

The issue of teaching languages – Finnish in Karelia and Russian in Finland – was also mentioned at the meeting. Growth of interest of this country to Russia has been observed recently, as well as the number of people who want to study Russian. According to Alexander Khudilainen, the potential of Petrozavodsk State University can be used for enhancement of the language teaching.

Elli Aaltonen, Director General of Regional State Administrative Agency for Eastern Finland, has told that within the scope of cooperation with our republic it is planned to organize career enhancement training for teachers of Karelia and Finland. Besides, the parties have reached the arrangement on implementation of the project on preparation of textbooks of Finnish language for schools of the republic.

Alexander Khudilainen has also told that within the past year the Government of Karelia has taken serious steps to make various contacts with Finland more active, first of all, in trade, economic, and investment spheres. This work has already born fruit. The number of business proposals from Finnish companies grows. Within the first three months of 2013 foreign trade turnover with Finland has grown more than 40% in comparison with the similar period of 2012, and relative density of Finland in foreign trade turnover of the Republic of Karelia during this period has doubled.

The issue of development of the international passenger railway communication from Petrozavodsk is in progress. Two test trips of the passenger train to Joensuu have been made, and now the management of Russian railways and Finland negotiate launching of regular service on this route. Regular bus service is established between Petrozavodsk and Joensuu since August, 8. As the meeting participants observed, all these projects open new prospects for development of bilateral cooperation.

Within the scope of the visit to the republic the delegation of Eastern Finland has a number of meetings with heads of executive bodies of Karelia. Prospects of cooperation between business communities of Karelia and Finland were discussed in the Ministry of Economic Development, and issues of cooperation between emergency rescue services were discussed in the State Committee for Life Support and Public Safety and the Central Administration of the Ministry of the Russian Federation for Civil Defense, Emergency Management and Natural Disasters Response in the Republic of Karelia.

The next day the delegation has visited the business incubator and the Ministry of Health and Social Development to negotiate implementation of joint projects.
