After the collapse of the clashing blocks and the end of the “cold war”, regionalism
became a determining factor in the world policy. Filling of interstate links with specific content
tends to takes place more often at regional level.
As a full member of the Russian Federation, Republic of Karelia seeks to derive maximal
benefit from extending cooperation and establishing relations with regions of other countries.
Although regions included in the Russian Federation do not have, in accordance with the
Constitution of the Russian Federation, the status of subjects of the international law, they are
entitled to conclude agreements and maintain international regional links at sub-governmental
level.
